During the Second World War, sailors in the US Navy wore two types of hats. One was a soft top hat with a reinforced lower band and tape with the ship's name, known as the "flat hat", and was disliked by sailors for its similarity to the hat worn by Donald Duck. The other hat worn was the soft white "Dixie Cup" or "dog dish" hat, meant to be worn with a square appearance and rolled edges. These hats were sometimes dyed dark blue or other colors to identify a sailor's duty station.
Despite being commonly referred to as "gob hats", this term was not officially used by the US Navy. These original US Navy surplus "Dixie Cup" hats are un-issued and continue to be used by sailors in the US Navy.
